In the wake of recent activities that suggest a potential alignment of views with the government, Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira has firmly denied that he might be shifting allegiances. “I don’t give credence to speculations. I am a servant of the people, and my consistent actions speak for themselves, I’m beyond the rhetoric,” Figueira said.

During the recent crisis following severe flooding in Linden, Figueira was asked by Stabroek News about his participation in the government’s relief efforts. He clarified that what some referred to as a “government walkabout” was in fact a collaborative effort among local stakeholders. “All elected officials in Linden and Region Ten were invited to help identify affected residents in need of assistance,” he explained. He commended local leaders for uniting to advocate for governmental support, emphasising that effective help is being mobilised for those impacted by the flooding.

In response to questions regarding Figueira’s actions at PNCR’s Press Conference on 27th September 2024, General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Sherwin Benjamin said, “I don’t understand why there is the focus of whether he was notified or not, the members of the party were notified that the team from centre is coming to visit the affected flood areas, persons indicated their availability and they were with us.”

Figueira also urged residents to engage with government initiatives aimed at alleviating the flooding crisis in a statement following a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Mark Phillips and key ministers. He revealed that the discussions centred on immediate actions to assist affected communities in Region Ten, highlighting the commitment of local representatives to secure necessary interventions.

On September 15, Figueira was removed from his position as Chairman of the Region 10 PNCR. Confirming that decision, party leader Aubrey Norton had stated, “The decision comes down to the party; the party evaluates the performance of all involved and makes decisions based on their performance or lack thereof.”

Figueira characterised the move as shortsighted, asserting, “My contributions in Linden and Region Ten have been strategic and impactful.” He expressed confidence in his political future, asserting that his commitment extends beyond partisan lines to encompass broader national development.

Figueira, who maintained his position as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, said that party leadership changes were a normal process and that it was up to the party’s membership to determine the motivations behind such decisions. He refrained from making definitive statements about his confidence in the current leadership but reiterated his commitment to serve the people of Guyana.

Figueira outlined key principles guiding his political stance, including a rejection of exclusionary practices, support for national unity, and a commitment to democratic values. “I believe in putting country above party and people above politics,” he stated, emphasising his unwavering dedication to the citizens of Guyana.

Earlier this year, Figueira faced a similar setback when he was removed from his role as shadow Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport without prior notice, a decision he had described as disrespectful.
