The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) commenced its 50th Fire Prevention anniversary yesterday, embracing the theme, “Fire Safety and Green, One Guyana Dream.” The event began with uplifting music performed by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) band, setting a celebratory tone for the occasion.

According to a press release from the GFS, this year’s fire prevention month will encompass a variety of activities across all ten administrative regions of Guyana. These will include community outreach initiatives, fire safety exhibitions, visits to children’s and senior citizens’ homes, school visits, fire safety talks, a school fair and exhibition, a curry-que, as well as futsal and cricket competitions. Many activities will be hosted at fire stations and within local communities. The release said the GFS is urging all citizens to prioritize fire safety and prevention to mitigate the risks associated with fire incidents. It emphasized the importance of equipping homes and businesses with fire suppression tools or systems, remaining vigilant during dry seasons, and promptly reporting any fires to the service.

At yesterday’s opening held at the National Cultural Centre, leading fireman Dayne Paul recited the Firefighters’ Prayer, which was succeeded by a session of praise and worship led by the GPF band. The service included prayers from various faiths (Hindu, Muslim, Indigenous, and Christian), with contributions from firewoman Budhram, fireman Giles, leading fireman Dillon, and firewoman Edwin. Short sermons were delivered by Pandit Omkaar Sharma of the Guyana Pandit Council and Dr Wilbert Lee from the First Assembly of God Church, emphasizing unity and safety, the press release stated.

Special performances featured local artist Carlvin Burnette and leading fireman Edwards, who captivated attendees with their musical talents, the release said. It added that the event concluded with a vote of thanks from Divisional Officer Haimchandra Persaud, followed by the marching off of the Colour Party. Among those present were Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, Mayor Alfred Mentore, Chief of Defence representative Commander Harmon, Assistant Commissioner of Operations Errol Watts, and Deputy Director of Prisons Kevin Pilgrim. Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees for their participation in this significant event.
