A bandit died yesterday after he was shot by a Berbice businessman during an attempted robbery at his jewellery store along the Main Road in New Amsterdam.

The two bandits armed with a firearm invaded Vickram’s Jewelery and Pawnshop at Trinity Street and Main Road New Amsterdam, just about 10.20 am yesterday.

According to information gathered, the two bandits with hoodies, entered the premise, and robbed one customer.

During the ordeal, the bandits shot one of the customers in the right leg. The customer has since sought medical attention.

The owner, who is a licensed firearm holder, on hearing the commotion immediately returned fire resulting in the two robbers attempting to flee with items stolen.

Eyewitnesses yesterday said that the two robbers then ran along Trinity Street into the New Amsterdam Primary School compound where the injured bandit collapsed.

The bandit, who has since been identified to be from Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, was found lying face up with a single gunshot injury to the chest. A Taurus 9mm handgun with a magazine containing live rounds along other items that were stolen were found on the deceas-ed and on the ground.

Meanwhile, video footage from teachers at the school showed the two men entering the compound and after the injured bandit collapsed the second attacker who was seen wearing a three-quarter pants called on a teacher who said that she was scared to exit the classroom after which the person left.

Meanwhile, Command-er of Region Six, Shivper-saud Bacchus, yesterday told Stabroek News, that the police in Berbice are actively investigating the matter and are on the hunt for the second person suspected to be involved in the matter.
