A fire officer yesterday appeared in court on cybercrime charges of spreading false information about several of her colleagues including Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham and was placed on $350,000 after denying the charges before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Fire officer Natoya Chu is accused of using a computer system to spread false information about several ranks within the fire service between February 23 and 26, 2024.
The allegations involve Wickham, leading firewoman Roshana Corlette, Dwayne Scotland, Amanda Pidoo, leading firewoman Shenny Subratri, and fire service medical staff member Shaniece Hatton.
The prosecution did not object to bail but informed the court that during the specified dates, a series of Facebook posts made under a fake profile disseminated false information about the individuals named. Following these incidents, an investigation was launched, and members of the cybercrime unit contacted Chu, requesting that she present her phone. It was subsequently discovered that she owned the social media account in question.
Magistrate Azore granted bail for all charges at $50,000 each, totaling $350,000. The case has been adjourned until October 21, 2024, for statements.
