Berbice bandit shot dead has been identified

A New Amsterdam bandit who was fatally shot by a businessman during a robbery at his jewellery store along the Main Road in New Amsterdam on Tuesday has since been identified as Terrence John.

According to information gathered, John, 26, resided in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam and was arrested in September, 2022, after being caught on a narcotics farm in the Upper Berbice River.

Two bandits armed with a firearm invaded Vickram’s Jewelery and Pawn-shop at Trinity Street and Main Road New Amsterdam, just about 10.20 am on Tuesday.

According to information gathered, the two bandits, covered with hoodies, entered the premises and robbed one customer.

During the ordeal, the bandits shot one of the customers in  the right leg. The customer had to seek medical attention.

The owner, who is a licensed firearm holder, on hearing the commotion, returned fire resulting in the two robbers attempting to flee with items stolen.

Eyewitnesses had said that the two robbers then ran along Trinity Street into the New Amsterdam Primary School compound where the injured bandit now identified as John collapsed.

He was found lying face up with a single gunshot injury to the chest.

A Taurus 9mm handgun with a magazine containing live rounds along other items that were stolen were found in the deceased’s pockets and on the ground.

Police in Berbice are continuing the hunt for the second bandit.
