– winner’s purse set at US $5000
The fifth edition of the KFC Goodwill International School Football was officially launched yesterday at the Cara Lodge Hotel in Georgetown, with teams from three Caribbean nations, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Suriname, scheduled to land in Guyana in December.
Reigning champions of the tourney, Clarendon College of Jamaica, returns to the competition as does last year’s runners-up, St. Benedict’s College from Trinidad and Tobago.
At the launch, Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of the Petra Organisation, noted that it being the fifth edition of the tournament sends a strong signal that it is sustainable and now a staple in the school’s football season in Guyana.
He also thanked sponsors KFC for believing in the organisation’s capability in hosting the competition.
The winners and runners-up from the upcoming schools football league will represent Guyana, while hinterland schools DC Caesar Fox Secondary (Region #7) and the winner of Annai versus St Stanislaus Secondary in Region 9 will join the other three Guyanese sides.
The winner of the Suriname schools competition will also enter the competition, as they have organised a playoff to select a representative.
The tournament is expected to begin on December 15 and conclude on December 22. Two venues will be utilised, with the Queen’s College and Ministry of Education Grounds playing host to those matches.
On the other hand, Mendonca committed to his organisation delivering a well-run package.
Meanwhile, Beharry Restaurant Holdings Inc./KFC Guyana, Sadia Strand, joined the launch virtually and expressed her excitement with the company being a part of the competition yet again. She also made mention of the company having confidence in the Petra Organisation pulling off a smooth tournament.
Meanwhile, Assistant Director of Sports Franklin Wilson praised the tournament, which is an innovator within the Caribbean Community, noting that the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport will continue to support developmental projects and programmes of this nature that provide an intrinsic value to the nation.
The winners of this year’s tournament will pocket USD$5,000 and will hold aloft a beautiful hand-sculpted wooden trophy by Rodwell Ward. According to the organisers, the trophy will be a lien, meaning that a team will have to win the competition at least three times to take it home.
