A five-year-old child of Prospect, East Bank Demerara, died yesterday after a metal barrel exploded while his parents were attempting to cut it open with a welding torch.
Detectives from Regional Division 4’B’ are investigating the incident that resulted in the death of Fayyaz Sahid.
The incident occurred around 4.30 pm at the family’s residence located at Lot 174 Prospect. According to initial reports, Fayyaz’s parents, Faiaze Sahid, a 35-year-old, and Jessica Williams, a 37-year-old, were cutting a metal barrel using a Total Arc Welding Torch on their veranda to make a BBQ grill.
During this process, the barrel unexpectedly exploded and hit Fayyaz, who was nearby. The parents immediately transported their son to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police were notified of the incident and an investigation was launched. Regional Commander Deputy Superintendent Wayne DeHearte visited the scene along with a party of policemen. Upon examination of the barrel, ranks observed a picture with a warning sign indicating “highly flammable.”
The top of the barrel had blown off during the event, leading to the fatal injuries sustained by Fayyaz.
