The Puruni business centre was a loose arrangement allowed to go on for too long

Dear Editor,

The things that will only take place in Guyana… like having fuel bonds, selling gasoline and diesel, in the midst of hotels, restaurants, grocery store, night club, even a pharmacy… all places where people congregate, mix and mingle.

Now a horrendous fire of immense magnitude has created untold destruction and chaos in Puruni Landing, Mazaruni community, where fifteen buildings were completely destroyed in the conflagration. As usual, it is alleged, the destroyed buildings were not insured.

What madness would allow the storage of a commodity like fuel to be stored for selling purposes, in an environment where people congregate, and which seemed not to be in tightly controlled surroundings or management, from the level of destruction reported? This was a loose arrangement allowed to go on for heavens know how long.

The authorities must answer how a careless and seemingly lackadaisical operation, wrought with risks, hazards, and fraught with dangerous consequences was allowed to carry on business casually oblivious to what could occur, as it did on Wednesday morning. My sympathies to all persons in particular and the community in general who were impacted by this horrible tragedy.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
