‘Rats Memorial’ Football Championship
– Rivers View, Potaro to contest women’s decider
Rising Stars and Potaro Strikers will contest the men’s divisional, while Rivers View and Potaro Strikers will battle in the women’s decider following semifinal wins in the ‘Rats Memorial’ Football Championship on Wednesday evening.
Staged at the Bartica Community Centre ground, Rising Stars dismantled Agastash 5-0. The contest was effectively over at the conclusion of the first half, as Rising Stars recorded four unanswered goals.
Joshua Jones commenced the rout with a second-minute strike, before Louis Muller doubled their advantage via a 12th-minute conversion.
Ian Gomes then got into the scoring act as he etched his name on the score-sheet in the 18th minute. Gomes then completed his brace in the 28th minute, as the score ballooned to 4-0. The result was then sealed in the 48th minute, as Ezekiel Baldeo found the back of the net.
On the other hand, the Potaro Strikers squeaked past Beacons 1-0. Shane Jones settled the contest, as he made his presence felt in the 25th minute. Rising Stars and Potaro will contest the final tomorrow at the same venue, while the losers will contest the third-place playoff.
Meanwhile, Rivers View sealed their berth in the women’s divisional final after beating Dog Point 2-0. Felicia Gonsalves opened the scoring in the second minute. She then completed her brace to double the team’s advantage with a 24th minute conversion.
The teams will battle in the final on Saturday. The winner of the men’s segment will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth place finishers will receive $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000, respectively, and the corresponding accolade.
In the women’s category, the eventual victor will pocket $175,000 and a trophy, while the second and third-place sides will receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, and the corresponding accolade.
