Pensioner killed in accident on Le Ressouvenir public road

An accident yesterday morning around 8.30  on the Le Ressouvenir public road, East Coast Demerara, has resulted in the death of 85-year-old Stephen Correia, a pensioner of Lot 1 Le Ressouvenir.

The accident involved a car – PAG 7093 – driven by Garfield Hoppie, a 58-year-old carpenter from La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara.

According to preliminary reports, the car was travelling west on the public road at a high speed when Correia attempted to cross the road from south to north, and ended up in the path of the car. As a result of the collision, Correia fell on the roadway and sustained injuries to his left hand, left ankle, and other parts of his body.

He was picked up by public-spirited citizens in a semi-conscious condition and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the incident, Hoppie was arrested and is currently in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Correia’s body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination scheduled for Monday, October 14.
