Guyanese Dr Joanne Collins-Gonsalves elected Fellow of UK’s Royal Historical Society

The Royal Historical  Society (RHS) of the United Kingdom has elected Guyanese Dr Joanne Collins-Gonsalves as a Fellow, in recognition of her tremendous contribution to historical scholarship.

According to a press release from RHS, Dr Collins-Gonsalves holds a PhD in History and is the author of the acclaimed book: Iris de Freitas Brazao, Legal Luminary and Trailblazer: Caribbean, Canada, Wales, England 1896-1989, featured by the University of London as 1 of 3 “fascinating items from the collections” of 312,000 volumes within the holdings of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library.

She is also the author of Portuguese in Business in Guyana 1835-1935: A History of Entrepreneurship, Expansion and Diversification (forthcoming 2024) and From Ashes to Ferro-Concrete: A History of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Guyana) 1914-2014 (2014).

Additionally, the release said, she has authored over 30 research projects, academic articles, book chapters, research papers, conference papers, and biographical profiles in total. She is currently the Managing Director of Historical Research International Inc. She serves on the Board of the Edmonton Heritage Council, the Advisory Board of the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society, and the Board of the Rotary Club of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, among other posts.

She is a graduate of both the University of Guyana, BA, History (where she received the Council of the University Award) and the University of the West Indies where she graduated with the Doctor of Philosophy in History.

Her work continues to inspire and resonate with readers, making a significant impact on the field of historical research, the release said.

The RHS was founded in 1868 in England and is a successful learned society, membership organisation and charity with a 156-year history. The RHS acts as a champion of history, both inside universities and within culture. In a congratulatory correspondence, RHS President Professor Emma Griffin (University London), welcomed Dr Collins-Gonsalves and invited her to participate fully as a Fellow of the RHS, the release said.
