Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn yesterday visited the site of the recent Puruni Landing fire and engaged with affected residents to assess the damage and explore solutions for enhancing safety measures.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission yesterday, through its Puruni office, donated 45 hampers to assist those impacted, highlighting the government’s commitment to community welfare during this challenging time. The Home Affairs Minister presented the hampers on behalf of the GGMC.

The fire destroyed 15 buildings and left many families in distress, prompting urgent discussions on fire prevention strategies.

As part of a broader initiative, the release said, Benn emphasized the importance of proactive safety practices among residents and businesses, urging them to equip their properties with essential fire prevention tools, including fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and buckets of sand, to mitigate future risks.

Regional Divisional Comman-der Senior Superintendent of Police Dion Moore, Assistant Superintendent Doodnauth Chatram, Inspector Johann Henry, a team from law enforcement, and Sub-Officer of the Bartica Fire Service Jason Roberts were part of the delegation accompanying Benn, the release said.

It added that the ministry, in collaboration with the Guyana Fire Service and the Guyana Police Force, is actively monitoring the situation closely. Efforts are underway with regional authorities and emergency services to provide ongoing support to the affected community.

According to the Guyana Fire Service, the blaze, which started around 10:30 am, was traced to a fuel station owned by Glaston Fiffee, 46, and his wife, Alanna Fiffee, 37 in the Miners Choice neighbourhood. Preliminary investigations indicate that a malfunction in one of the fuel pumps may have triggered the fire, which spread to other structures such as guest homes, storage facilities, and equipment. Investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, HIAS, in partnership with the Bureau of Refugees and Migrants and the Red Cross, is providing further assistance. Their contributions include hampers, household necessities, and a one-time financial award of $72,800 to help families with immediate needs. This aid was provided to a total of 50 households, the release said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has also pledged additional safety resources to the community, committing to the distribution of smoke detectors and fire extinguisher balls to both homes and businesses in Puruni Landing, enhancing fire safety and prevention measures moving forward.
