Former managing director of Willems Timber and Trading Company and former president of the Forest Products Association (FPA) John Willems, AA has died.
According to a release from the FPA, Willems died last Saturday, October 12th.
The release described him as having been “deeply rooted in the legacy of forestry and timber.”
It stated that he was born into a family with strong ties to the industry as his father was one of the founding members of the FPA of Guyana in l944.
“Mr Willems, affectionately known as ‘Uncle John’, was well versed in all aspects of the forest sector, having worked in concessions, sawmills and export. Known for his plain-spoken demeanour, he earned respect for his trustworthiness, reliability and unwavering integrity,” the release recalled.
It further said that throughout his life Willems served on its executive committee holding positions as president, executive member and trustee. His contributions to the development of laws and regulations within the sector were invaluable, and his knowledge unmatched, it added.
In addition to his work with the FPA, Willems generously shared his expertise with various organisations, including the Ethnic Relations Commission, the Guyana Forestry Commission (Board), Public Utilities Commission and the Salvation Army. He was also one of the founding members and trustees of the Private Sector Commission.
“His impact was widespread,” the release said. “The forestry sector has lost an irreplaceable stalwart. The members, staff and executives of the FPA express their profound grief at this loss and extend heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
