Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me space in your letter column to extend an open invitation to any official of the Government of Guyana, officials of GWI or any other relevant authority that oversees the water and wastewater treatment in Guyana, to come for a visit at a state-of-the-art water/wastewater treatment plant.
A little back story about me, I was born and raised in Berbice and then migrated to the US almost 3 decades ago and over the said period of time, the one thing that remained constant is the water woes in Guyana. I’m currently a state certified water/wastewater plant manager in the US that serves approximately half a million customers daily with clean drinking water and proper disposal of wastewater.
Water quality and supply had been a constant gripe of residents all across Guyana and during my numerous visits, most recent being for the CPL finals, I’ve experienced it firsthand. From low water pressure, no water, brown smelly water and the list goes on and on. The excuses for this are numerous and unless and until concrete efforts are implemented the water woes will continue.
Guyana, being the fastest growing economy in the world is commendable and lauded by many, but the basic services are at the heart of any development plan. I commend the Government for their infrastructure plan and rapid rate of many projects but sometimes it’s best to slow down and focus on the basic needs of the citizens and how to best approach the long-term solution rather than a quick fix.
Hence my offer to any government official, from the President down, to come and take a tour and see what a world class facility looks like, how it operates (we operate 24/7, 365 days per year) and what are some of the basics of keeping such a facility operating at peak output on a daily/yearly basis. This is not a sales offer, this is not to curry favors with anyone, this is me having the best interest of my homeland in mind. I will gladly schedule tours/class with anyone interested in taking up this offer free of charge.
In closing, I hope this letter peak someone’s interest in the government or GWI to at least be open to the idea of learning new ways or improving existing ways of doing things to benefit the people they serve. I will share my contact info with the media house and I’m giving them permission to share it with interested parties in the government or GWI.
Sincerely,
Ayaz Mohamed
