The Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in its attempt to continue staging female football at the school level, launched the inaugural Courts Guyana U-13 Girls Secondary Schools Championship.
It was officially launched yesterday at the National Training Centre in Providence, where visiting CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani was on hand to offer a few remarks.
Montagliani, who is also a Vice President of FIFA, underscored the importance of women’s football, stating, “Women’s football is not just the future of football; it’s the present. To see you running around and enjoying the game tells me that football here is on the rise.”
In the same breath, he also told the young attendees to look at football as a “lifelong gift,” also noting that there are opportunities to embark on careers in various aspects of the game, with a future not only on the pitch.
Meanwhile, GFF President Wayne Forde shared similar sentiments, expressing, “Over the next couple of weeks, we will be formalising the structure for the nationwide secondary school Under-13 championship. This initiative will enable young girls to entertain their classmates, parents, siblings, and friends.”
Forde compared the upcoming U13 championship to the Under-15 Blue Water Championship, which was run off earlier in the year.
He expressed hope that the upcoming tournament provides young and upcoming footballers with the opportunities to display their talents on a larger platform, which could lead to future opportunities in international competitions.
However, significant details such as venues, schools, and a timeframe for the commencement of the event were not disclosed.
