The official sod-turning exercise for the Blue Water Shipping Stadium on Durban Park transpired yesterday, with CONCACAF Chief and FIFA Vice-President Victor Montagliani as well as GFF President Wayne Forde among the officials that conducted the process.

Montagliani, who delivered the feature address at the brief ceremony, praised the direction and advancement of Guyana’s football under the leadership of Forde, noting that initiatives of this nature will only serve to inspire future generations of players.

He stated that FIFA and CONCACAF will continue to support the project given its long-term benefit to the nation and its footballing ambition.

The facility will continue to receive support from FIFA and CONCACAF after the government leased the federation the 7.3 acres of land for 50 years. It is expected to seat in the vicinity of 12,000 patrons and feature modern amenities inclusive of VIP booths, press boxes, conference rooms, a corporate centre, and a restaurant.

The venue, which is also slated to be the home of a professional league, will also feature a dedicated space for educational opportunities, youth sports, and non-profit ventures and events. However, the amount of funding that Blue Water Shipping will be investing into the construction of the venue remains a mystery. The company has acquired a five-year naming rights agreement.
