Moot Court Guyana (MCG) announced the launch of its first mooting competition of the 2024/2025 academic year with its International Law Mooting Competition (ILMC) which was held on Friday, a MCG release stated.
MCG is a student-led organisation within the Department of Law of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Guyana (UG) dedicated to enhancing the advocacy skills of LL.B [Bachelor of Laws degree] students through debates, mooting competitions, impromptu speaking competitions, and other advocacy-related competitions.
According to the release, the moot scenario for this competition raised questions of: i) international dispute resolution under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and ii) international humanitarian and human rights law, and public international law issues such as immunity.
The moot scenario was drafted by Neville Bissember, Lecturer, Department of Law, UG.
In Friday’s competition, six teams competed against each other in three rounds of competitions.
At the conclusion of the three rounds, Team 2, consisting of Fabian Green (Senior Counsel), Juneeda Jeffers (Junior Counsel), and Raheem Blair (Researcher), emerged victorious with 83.5 out of a possible 100 points, while Team 1, comprising Shamar Sukhu (Senior Counsel), John Applewhite-Hercules (Junior Counsel), and Anelia Bacchus (Researcher), secured second place with 78.5 out of a possible 100 points.
Juneeda Jeffers was named the overall Best Advocate for her
outstanding performance.
These two teams will face-off against each other in the final round of these competitions which is scheduled for Friday, October 15.
Justice Peter Hugh, who served as the judge for this mooting competition, commended all participants for their courage in participating in the mooting competition, and encouraged further participation to enhance their advocacy skills.
MCG continues to foster participation in these mooting activities as part of its commitment to developing the advocacy skills of every LL.B student, the release added.
