Cops seeking car, driver in connection with fatal hit and run

Police are looking for the driver of motorcar PSS 8190, in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred early yesterday morning on the public road at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.

According to a police press release, the incident occurred around 02:45 hrs and involved motorcar #PSS 8190, whose owner and driver remain unidentified, and motorcar #PRR 7218, owned by a 33-year-old self-employed resident of Meten-Meer-Zorg.

The police said that the victim was an unidentified male pedestrian of Amerindian descent who was standing on the southern side of the road with a group of people. As he attempted to cross the road from south to north, he was struck by PSS 8190, which was travelling west at a high speed. The pedestrian was thrown into the air and landed on the left rear side of PRR 7218, which was parked on the southern parapet facing east, the release said.

After hitting the pedestrian, the driver of PSS 8190 initially stopped a distance away before returning to the scene. However, as bystanders approached, the vehicle fled, the release said.

It added that the pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious state and conveyed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in a police vehicle, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead on arrival.

Checks for motor car PSS 8190 have so far been futile, police said. Investigations are in progress.
