The Ministry of Housing and Water has announced the fast-tracking of the installation of essential infrastructure to encourage occupancy in the new Golden Grove housing development on the East Bank of Demerara.

According to a release from the ministry, Minister Collin Croal, accompanied by Executive Director of Program Planning, Design and Implementation at Guyana Water Inc, Marlon Daniels; Deputy Director of Projects at the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Intakab Indarjeet, and other technical officers, yesterday visited Block 5 Golden Grove where a site has been identified for a new water well.

Minister Croal spoke of the plans for the area. “There is a massive long-term plan for the East Bank of Demerara. In addition to our current efforts, the next phase includes constructing a treatment plant. While this is part of the long-term strategy, we have an immediate tender out for the well.”

In the meantime, a distribution network will serve other nearby blocks.

Croal also emphasised that every effort is being made to expedite these works so that allottees can move in as soon as possible. “These are new areas we have allocated. In existing areas where residents have faced low water pressure, we are ongoing with works to resolve these issues.”

Measures to address water supply problems along the East Bank of Demerara, the release noted, include the treatment plant at Covent Garden, which will be interconnected with other systems to enhance pressure levels, with the minister pointing out, “For example, in the Little Diamond area, where we built several houses, residents can now access water and connect their services.”

Regarding the electrical supply for the new neighbourhoods, the minister informed that funding is available, and the agency is collaborating with Guyana Power and Light to finalise the design, and when completed, the procurement process will begin, the release added.
