A would-be robber was yesterday shot and injured during an attempted robbery at Techguy Solutions, 33 Middleton Street and Campbell Avenue, Campbellville, Georgetown.
According to a police press release, the incident occurred around 11:40 am and involved the business owner, 39-year-old Dominic Narayan, a licensed firearm holder of Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Narayan told the police that he was sitting behind his desk at his store when a man entered and held him and his staff at gunpoint, demanding money. Around the same time, a customer, 33-year-old Ronick Mohabir entered the store and the would-be robber grabbed him. There was a struggle and the man fired his gun, striking Mohabir in the left hand, the police were told.
Narayan, in response, drew his licensed firearm and fired two shots, one of which hit the suspect in the abdomen, the release said. The man collapsed and was later taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by police, where he remains unconscious under police guard. Mohabir is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital.
Narayan recounted, “I was sitting at the desk and he walked in like a regular customer and asked if we could fix his phone, and then he pulled his gun…”
Narayan also shared that this was not the first time his store had been targeted. He recalled a previous attempt where he fought off intruders because they were unarmed. Expressing shock at this latest incident, he said, “This attempt, I can’t even describe it.”
Police recovered a firearm from the suspect, which contained one live .38 round and three spent shells. Investigations are ongoing.
