A Strathspey Squatting Area man yesterday pleaded guilty to murdering the mother of the woman he was in a relationship with four years ago.

Linden Junior Isaacs appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court and pleaded guilty to the murder of Velma Pickering, who he had stabbed multiple times with an ice pick on May 11, 2020, at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.

According to the agreed facts presented in court, Isaacs, who was then 28 years old, attacked Pickering, 56, while she was at home with her toddler grandson. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape her house and collapsed in a neighbour’s yard.

The court also heard that Pickering had often stepped in to protect her daughter, who was in an abusive relationship with Isaacs. Pickering was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, with the cause of death listed as perforation of the heart.

Isaacs is scheduled to return to court on November 14, 2024, for sentencing.
