CRG expects a thorough investigation on the St. Joseph’s High School incident and a clear message be sent on students’ safety

Dear Editor,

The reported sexual assault allegations at St. Joseph High School need to be investigated by the Guyana Police Force (GPF), and the Ministry of Human Services needs to be involved. It is good to see that the Ministry of Education has taken the initiative to look into this very serious matter, and it is now important for the GPF and the Ministry of Human Services to take the lead in the investigation.

The sexual assault of the young boy that happened not too long ago in another school’s washroom was not thoroughly investigated and properly resolved. It is important that a clear message is sent as to what is and is not allowed in our schools. Early intervention in such criminal activity by minors can help prevent further escalation as they age.

CRG looks forward to the authorities thoroughly investigating and providing the required actions that must be taken to protect the safety of our students and prevent further occurrence of such heinous crimes. Hopefully, the Ministry of Human Services will help the victims become strong survivors of the alleged crime. There is no place for juvenile delinquents in our school system if our aim is to provide a safe learning environment.

Sincerely,

Jamil Changlee
