Reigning national junior champion Ricardo Narine triumphed in the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) October Rapid Open Championship, which was staged at the David Rose Special School, Thomas Lands, on Sunday.
This was disclosed in a press release from the GCF. According to the correspondence, Narine emerged victorious following a score of 6.5 points in the seven-round championship to walk away with $20,000 and a trophy.
Narine in a post-tournament comment said, “Going into the tournament, I noticed a lot of new faces, and I was not sure what to expect from them. After seeing their games, I was impressed by their skill level. Still, I remained confident in my winning chances, or at least podium.”
On the other hand, Kyle Couchman also finished with 6.5 points but had to settle for second place, as he pocketed $10,000 and a trophy. Rounding out the top three was Kishun Puran, who ended on five points.
Meanwhile, National Women’s Champion Jessica Callender ended in fourth place on five points as the highest female finisher, while Darshanand Ramlall of the Essequibo Coast rounded out the top five with 4.5 points.
The event was supervised by FM Anthony Drayton. He was assisted by GCF Head of Youth and Development Committee Gilbert Williams.
