Police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old motorcyclist  while he was suspected to be speeding along Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt.

Dead is Tevin Griffith, a mechanic of Lot 3420 Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown. Preliminary investigations revealed that a group of motorcycles were proceeding west along Mandela Avenue on Tuesday at about 20.45 hours, at a fast rate. None of the riders was wearing a  safety helmet.

Griffith, who was part of the group, was lying flat on his motorcycle and proceeding in the same direction at a fast rate when he lost control and collided with the guardrail. As a result, the motorcyclist was flung on the roadway sustaining multiple injuries in the process. He was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders.

The mother of the motorcyclist, Dyan Griffith, told Stabroek News that on Tuesday around 10 pm, she received news from one of her son’s friends who was with him that her son left the dam located on Mandela Ave, opposite the masjid with two friends who were riding their own bikes. She was told that Tevin was heading to the John Fernandes squatting area located off Mandela Avenue, when a bike came out suddenly from Aubrey Barker Road and hit Tevin who lost control of his bike and struck the guardrail.

When asked if her son was doing any stunts, the mother responded, “We are not sure if my son was doing any stunts because all I know is what eye witnesses (friends) told us.”

The deceased’s sister, Niesha Griffith, related, “When the person hit him,  according to the friend, the rider ride up a little, turned his back and watch and, continue to ride away and the friends saw that and one of them ride  behind the guy and chased him up McDoom side but wasn’t able to catch him. The other friend came to my brother’s rescue and after seeing his condition, came home and inform my mother.” She added that the family is waiting to hear from the police as the two friends gave statements and were told that the police will call them back for more information and also to keep the family updated on the investigation.

The police have processed the scene but were unable to find any eyewitnesses. However CCTV footage from one camera was located and is yet to be reviewed.
