The University of Guyana’s Convocation ceremony is scheduled to begin on November 7th, 2024. The event will primarily be held in person, with a virtual component to accommodate graduands who are unable to attend in person due to unavoidable circumstances. This includes law students currently studying in Trinidad and Tobago and the Bahamas.
However, there is a significant issue for students attending virtually from these countries: they do not have access to the graduation gown, cap, and tassel. These ceremonial outfits are integral to the experience and tradition of graduation.
To address this, could the University of Guyana not consider sending a set of gowns, caps, and tassels to the Guyanese Consulates in Trinidad and the Bahamas via courier? This would enable the students to be appropriately dressed for the virtual ceremony and enjoy a complete graduation experience, including the opportunity to take photos marking this important milestone. The items could be returned to the Consulates afterward.
This unfortunate situation recurs each year, depriving deserving students of the honour and joy of fully participating in a proper graduation ceremony. It is a momentous occasion in their lives, and they deserve the opportunity to celebrate it properly.
