Police are investigating an armed robbery committed at a supermarket owned by a Chinese national.
The incident occurred on Friday at about 21.05 hours at the An Sheng Supermarket, located at Kuru Kururu on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. The supermarket is owned by a Chinese national, Zhenfa, a businessman of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.
The robbers made off with $500,000 cash, a quantity of Digicel and GTT [One Communications] phone cards valued at $150,000, and three bottles of Hennessy cognac valued at $60,000.
Investigations revealed that the businessman, assisted by several employees, was preparing to close for the day when three robbers entered the supermarket. One, armed with a handgun, held everyone at gunpoint and stood guard at the northern door. The other two went behind the cashier’s counter and took the cash and phone cards from the cash register and the cognac from a nearby shelf.
Police ranks from the Timehri Police Station responded.
Checks were made in the area, and one of the suspects, Jason Richard, 28, of Lot 250 Independence Boulevard, Albouystown, was seen in the area and arrested. He was wearing the same clothing seen in CCTV footage at the time of his arrest. The other two suspects were not located.
Investigations are ongoing.
