Calypso Rose among Tobago icons honoured by the THA

“Calypso Rose”

(Trinidad Guardian) McCartha Linda “Calypso Rose” Sandy-Lewis was among eight icons in Tobago honoured by the Tobago House of Assembly on Friday. Milford Road in Scarborough was officially renamed the Calypso Rose Boulevard.

The other seven who were honoured included the late Winston “Mighty Shadow” Bailey, former T&T football coach Bertille St Clair, former chief administrator Allan Richards, late politician James Biggart, late anthropologist Dr Jacob Delworth Elder, and educators Aloysius Morean and Edna Morean (education), both of whom are now deceased.

At 84, Calypso Rose started her acceptance speech by thanking God for keeping her alive and said she a few weeks ago she wrote a calypso about Tobago carnival. She received a warm and cheerful response from the crowd which gathered at the Esplanade in Scarborough for the event.

She said, “I want to thank Tobago for having a street in my name that when I go home, the name will still be there. I want to thank the THA and all the people of Tobago for giving me this wonderful time. And I want to thank you, Jesus, because you know I am standing upon the solid rock and the rock is Jesus.”

As the Calypso Rose Boulevard was officially unveiled, she exclaimed, “That’s my boulevard”

Among the other changes to Tobago’s landscape include the JD Elder roundabout, Mighty Shadow Boulevard, Bertille St Clair roundabout, Allan Richards roundabout, Morean Drive, and the James Biggart Avenue.
