Two men wanted by the police were apprehended on Saturday afternoon during an operation at Kairuni Backdam along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
According to a police press release by Guyana Police Force, Ghanie Jamie, 26, of South Sophia, Georgetown, and Hansi Jones, 27, also of Sophia, were wanted on serious charges. The former on murder allegations, the latter in connection with three counts of child rape.
At approximately 4 pm, acting on credible information, officers descended on the location where the suspects were believed to be hiding, the release said. On sighting the police, the men attempted to flee the scene, leading to a swift foot chase. Jones was captured after falling to the ground, while Jamie was apprehended about 25 metres away, it added.
A thorough search of Jones yielded a pistol suspected to be 9MM with its serial number filed off, along with three live rounds of 9MM ammunition and a spent shell, the release said. Additionally, police discovered a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa. When questioned about a firearm licence, Jones admitted he did not possess one, it added.
Both men were arrested and transported to the Mackenzie Police Station, where the firearm, ammunition, spent shell, and suspected narcotics were secured as evidence. The suspected cannabis, weighing 179 grammes, was weighed in Jones’s presence and subsequently marked, sealed, and lodged for further examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
