Two teenagers are in hospital following an accident involving their motorcycle and a car at Hampshire, Corentyne, Region Six.
The two injured teens have been identified as Jainarine Rampersaud, 18, a mechanic of Lot 223 Area ‘R’, Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne, and pillion rider, 15-year-old Stephon Verrapen, also of Port Mourant.
The driver of the car claimed that the motorcycle rear-ended his vehicle before riding away from the scene.
Witnesses reported that the car driver, armed with a cutlass, informed villagers that the motorcycle, bearing licence plate, CN 9498, had hit his car from behind, damaging the rear lights, before fleeing the scene without stopping. The driver said he pursued and caught up with the motorcycle, detailing the sequence of events to villagers.
According to police, after the collision, the teenagers were initially taken to the Port Mourant Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Rampersaud was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remains unresponsive as of Monday afternoon, according to relatives.
Commander of Regional Police Division #6, Senior Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus, confirmed that the driver, currently in custody and assisting with the investigation.
