The BetCage-sponsored Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) National T20 League continued yesterday with the Demerara Pitbulls defeating the Essequibo Anacondas at GCB’s LBI facility.

Although the Pitbulls only managed a lowly 124/8 (20 overs), their bowlers, led by U-19 spinner Golcharran Chulai, managed to prise out the Anacondas for just 99 in 17.1 overs to claim victory by 25 runs.

Batting first, the Pitbulls got off to a laboured start as openers Joshua Persaud and Raymond Perez struggled to get the ball away. They shared a 39-run start in 7 overs by the time Perez fell for a 23-ball 17.

His dismissal opened the floodgates as wickets started to tumble, and only Jonathan Foo’s blitzkrieg of an innings, even as his teammates kept losing their wickets, pushed the Pitbulls to a decent score. Foo smashed three fours and three sixes during his innings of 40 (21 balls), while Persaud had the next best score of 22 (21 balls).

Leading the way for the Anaconda bowlers was skipper Antony Adams, who captured 3-18 from his four overs, while Quentin Sampson (2-25) and Sagar Hathiramani (2/-16) provided support.

In response, the Anacondas contrived to implode in face of guileful bowling from the Pitbulls’ spinners, especially Chulai, who snapped up impressive figures of 3-14 from his quota of four overs. Dwain Dick (2-20) and Clinton Pestano (2-24) were the other two bowlers who made life miserable for the Anacondas.

The only batsman from the eventual losers to put up a fight was opener Kevin Boodie, who smashed five sixes and a four during his 24-ball 43, a knock in stark contrast to his teammates, who aside from two batters, could not get into double digit scores. The league continues today with action at the same venue, as the Berbice Piranhas take on the Demerara Hawks from 1:00pm.
