Three men appeared in the High Court yesterday before Judge Jo-Ann Barlow and a 12-member jury and after extensive deliberations they were found not guilty of the murder of a man at Parika.

The accused—Navindra Sugrim, Chaitram Persaud and Eashwar Sookdeo, all of Parika Façade—were charged in connection with the murder of 20-year-old Trevor Allen and appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ali-Seepaul in 2021. They were remanded to prison.

According to the initial police report, the incident occurred on October 31st, 2021 around 8:50 p.m. Allen and his two brothers were reportedly drinking at a local shop when an argument escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, Allen was allegedly punched and later attacked by three other men armed with knives and cutlasses. He sustained five stab wounds to the abdomen and a chop wound to the forehead. One of Allen’s brothers, Harvey Allen, attempted to intervene but was injured and forced to take refuge in a nearby canal.

The jury returned with a verdict of not guilty on both murder and manslaughter.

The state was represented by Mikel Puran, Preneeta Seeraj and Rbina Christmas.
