GECOM in engagements with ABCEU delegation

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has engaged in discussions with an America, Britain, Canada, and the European Union (ABCEU) delegation over the past few weeks as it prepares for next year’s general and regional elections. The meetings, described as essential for understanding Guyana’s electoral requisites, particularly focused on a comprehensive needs assessment requested by British High Commissioner Jane Miller.

PPP/C-nominated GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj told Stabroek News, “It’s time for us to have internal discussions about our responses, personnel, and the external support we might need.” He highlighted the importance of thorough preparation for a successful electoral process.

The urgency of the discussions was underscored by the completion of interviews for key electoral positions on October 22, 2024, although those roles remain unfilled. This delay has added to the pressing need for effective planning as the election date approaches.

Meanwhile, Opposition-nominated Commissioner Vincent Alexander pointed out that while biometric voting systems were vital, they were not the focal point of the recent meetings with the ABCEU delegation. “The ABCEU meeting was primarily a listening session,” he stated. He further indicated that the next step for GECOM was to formally request a comprehensive needs assessment from the United Nations Development Programme.

The needs assessment would pinpoint specific areas where assistance is required. Initial suggestions include the deployment of observer missions, training of electoral staff, public education campaigns, and media monitoring. This approach would enhance the integrity and smooth execution of the electoral process.

As the elections draw nearer, GECOM has ramped up its meeting schedule, creating additional opportunities to address potential issues, monitor ongoing activities, and finalize logistical arrangements well in advance.
