Shop owner, customer injured in shooting incident at Onderneeming

Two residents of Red Village, Onder-neeming, Essequibo Coast are currently hospitalised at the Suddie Public Hospital after they were injured during a shooting incident in their village on Wednesday night.

Sasha Prince, 39, who owns a small shop at Red Village and Merrodo Fredericks, 22, who was a customer at the shop, were hit by bullets in their stomach and upper right leg respectively. Prince is in the Intensive Care Unit, having undergone surgery, while Fredericks is said to be in a stable condition. The reason for the shots being fired and who or what they were fired at remain unknown at this time.

According to reports, three men were involved, two unidentified and one known as Kevin Fredericks. The police were called and later recovered two 9 MM spent shells.

Merrodo Fredericks related that he was at Sasha’s Shop in Red Village when two unidentified men emerged from some bushes and began shooting. He said he was hit in his upper right leg, but  managed to run into the house and hide under a bed.

Reports from others who were imbibing at the shop were that Kevin Fredericks was seen holding a silver gun and that he fired a shot at the ground before fleeing into the backyard and escaping over a fence. They described the scene as “bloody” and said that the area was becoming dangerous. Residents of Onderneeming said that there has been an increase of crime in the area.

The suspects remain at large as police continue their investigations.
