The Stanleytown Bridge, a vital connector between Canals No. 2 Polder and the Wales/Patentia area, was set to reopen during the course of last night following emergency repairs aimed at restoring its structural integrity.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, confirmed to Stabroek News last evening, “The bridge will be opened tonight (last night)”.
According to a press release from the Ministry last evening, a temporary closure was to occur from 11 pm to 2 am to facilitate the installation of a new steel structure. This three-hour shutdown was described as crucial for the precise installation of structural components that have been prepared offsite. Travellers, particularly those heading to the airport, were urged to plan accordingly to cross the bridge before the closure begins.
The Ministry’s advisory notes, “We thank the public for their patience and cooperation as we work to restore safe and reliable access across the Stanleytown Bridge.” After the installation work, the bridge will reopen to all traffic, including trucks with a weight limit of 60 tons.
This repair initiative is a collaborative effort involving several organizations, including Politecnica, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, GAICO, E.C. Vieira Investments, SH Advance, Amazon Supply Construction and Services, and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA). Local government officials, along with support teams from GWI, GPL, and the Sea Defence Department, are also playing vital roles in the repair operations which started on Saturday. Access for heavily laden vehicles remains restricted until the work is completed.
