Magistrate Tuanna Hardy yesterday denied pretrial liberty to poultry vendor Seeindra Marimutoo who was charged with the murder of a robber.
The defendant has been remanded to prison and is expected to return to the Whim Magistrate’s Court for a hearing on November 29, 2024.
On October 26 last, Marimutoo was plying his trade at the Port Mourant Market when Parmanand Pertab called `Mikey’, 18, was killed following a robbery. The defendant was not required to plead to the capital offence.
However, defence counsel, Latchmi Rahamat, advanced arguments challenging the nature of the charge instituted against her client.
Initial investigations revealed that a thirty-one-year-old businessman, went to his jewellery store, located within the Port Mourant market at approximately 07:30 hrs. Two hours later he was attacked by the bandits, as he was attending to his customers. It is alleged that Pertab was armed with a cutlass and his accomplice had a gun. During the attack, the businessman’s employee was injured.
The gunman forced the jeweller to the ground before grabbing a blue drawstring bag in which gold jewels were placed, and discharging several rounds, resulting in injury to a bystander.
It is alleged that Pertab was confronted by several persons who managed to disarm him and retrieve the bag containing the jewellery. Subsequently, Pertab sustained several wounds about his body. He was later transported to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body was examined by the police and it was observed that he had one chop wound to his right hand and two to his upper back.
