CWI Regional Super50
The Guyana Harpy Eagles’ CWI Regional Super50 campaign finally took flight thanks to solid fifties from skipper Tevin Imlach and opener Matthew Nandu, which led Guyana to an eight-wicket victory over the Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Brian Lara Cricket last night.
The victory means that the Guyanese have now broken their ‘duck’, winning a game on its fourth attempt.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, the Guyanese bowlers, led by veteran Veerasammy Permaul, turned in a commendable shift, restricting the Hurricanes to 139 all out in 34.2 overs.
Permaul grabbed 3-24 from 9 overs, helping to rip out the eye of the Hurricanes batting line-up. He was well supported by pacer Nial Smith (2-42) and fellow left-arm spinner Ashmeade Nedd (2-19), as the only substantial scores, 36 and 34 not out, came from Rahkeem Cornwall and Jeremiah Louis, respectively.
In reply, with rain reducing the match to 41 overs a side, Imlach and Nandu partnered for 117 in a second wicket partnership after Tagenarine Chanderpaul (3) had gotten out early.
Imlach managed his third half-century of the competition, an unbeaten 69 (4sx9) from 76 balls, while Nandu made an even 50 (4sx3, 6sx1) from 74 balls.
Despite losing Nandu, the Harpy Eagles got to 141/2 (27.5 overs) to win by 8 wickets with 14.1 overs to spare.
The Harpy Eagles will head back into action tomorrow against the Jamaica Scorpions at the Queen’s Park Oval.
