As part of government’s initiative to offer life skills to every citizen, 23 women, 18 of whom are unemployed, have been successfully trained in garment construction through the Women Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN) from Sophia, Region Four, and are the second batch of trained seamstresses who will now become entrepreneurs.
This was announced on Tuesday in a release from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (MoHSSS), which added that in addition to learning garment construction, the women were educated on business development and creating their business plan, through the Ministry.
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, praised the women for their commitment and achievement. “I’m ecstatic that so many of you are here today to graduate because this has been something I’ve been working on with you and the community. Conversations were leading to this where we wanted to ensure that you got the opportunity for empowerment starting with technical vocational training. I am so happy to see the commitment and passion that you have demonstrated in working towards completing four levels of garment construction and I can see the visible evidence of this in the beautiful creations. Some of you have babies in your arms but that never stopped you. You came out, you spent the time and here you are receiving a certificate today. I applaud your achievement and I look forward to the continuation of this in Sophia.”
Dr Persaud noted that the Sophia Community Centre is now a hub for related activities, and pledged that through the MoHSSS, it will remain a hub for garment construction, adding, “One day you too will become mentors and teachers which will open the doors for other women.”
The participants expressed their gratitude for the courses in garment construction and business literacy, stating that they will soon launch their businesses.
