Senior engineer at the Ministry of Public Works, Kester Hinds says that the damage to the bridge on Duncan Street and Bel Air Road was primarily caused by heavy-duty trucks utilising the route.

He reassured residents that plans are in place to repair this section of road as part of the ongoing works to extend the new highway south of Bel-Air. The damage was cited in a recent letter in this newspaper.

The Ministry of Public Works initiated a project in August valued at $1.8 billion that involves the construction of a four-lane carriageway stretching from the East Coast Highway to Delhi Street. It includes the development of a double-lane carriageway on the reserve west of Delhi Street for northbound traffic and the installation of concrete revetments between the East Coast Demerara Highway and the Railway Embankment. Additionally, concrete drains will be installed on both sides of the proposed roadway between the Railway Embank-ment and Delhi Street.

Moreover, the project also entails the construction of two substantial concrete bridges to establish a connection to Dennis Street.

The Ministry recently announced that the project scope will be expanded to link up with the Diamond-to-Craig highway.
