14-year-old student shot after companion robs woman of purse

Police are currently investigating a shooting incident involving a 14-year-old student from ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, who has been hospitalised with a gunshot wound to the chest. The incident occurred around 10:40 pm on Thursday, at D’Urban Park, Georgetown.

The student told police that he was walking along Charlotte Street with a friend known only as ‘Ranks’ from ‘B’ Field, Sophia, when they saw a woman walking by. ‘Ranks’ accosted the woman, pulled a cutlass from his waist, and took away her handbag. They both ran south on Albert Street, and several persons chased them. The student recounted that he turned east onto South Road while ‘Ranks’ took off in an unknown direction.

The pursuit continued and the 14-year-old told police that he ran towards D’Urban Park, where he was apprehended by a group of men. He described being beaten and kicked before hearing a loud explosion followed by a burning sensation to the left side of his chest. The men then dispersed and public-spirited persons assisted him and summoned the police.

The injured student was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was admitted to the Male Medical Ward nursing a gunshot wound. His condition is currently reported as stable.

Efforts were made by police to locate both ‘Ranks’ and the female victim, as well as the men involved in the assault and shooting, with several persons questioned.

Investigations are ongoing.
