…Mabaruma clinches women’s crown
By Michaelangelo Jacobus
As the curtains came down over the weekend on the Guyana Volleyball Federation’s (GVF) Republic Bank/One Guyana ‘B’ Division competition, it was the Hururu Hydras and Mabaruma who stood tall, winning the male and female categories respectively.
The two victorious teams emerged from a total of 49 teams, both male and female, participating from across eight regions in Guyana.
The knockout rounds involved eight female and eight male teams, inclusive of the eventual winners, who battled at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue. The quarter finals was played on a round robin basis with two male and two female zones.
Advancing to the male semi finals were the Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) of Berbice, Alpha of Georgetown, Warriors ‘A’ of Bartica and Hururu Hydras of Region 10. Over in the female category, Mabaruma, Lethem, Siparuta and Bartica advanced to the semis. In the male category, PMTC played Warriors ‘A’ and won in sets of 25 – 21 and 26 – 24 while Alpha played Hururu Hydras, with the latter defeating their opponents 25-19, 14-25 and 15-11 to advance to the final.
In the female category. Mabaruma got past Bartica 25-16, 20-25 and 16- 14 while Lethem played Siparuta and won 25- 21, 26-24 and 15-13 to advance to the final.
The female final saw Mabaruma beating Lethem 30-28, 25-21 and 25-19 in a fairly tame affair. However, the Male category served up a treat as the Hururu Hydras defeated PMTC in a nail-biting finish, losing their first two sets 19-25 and 21- 25 before storming back to win three straight, 25-22, 25-21 and 15- 13 to put their hands on the trophy.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. gave brief remarks, talking up a promising future for the development of not only Volleyball in Guyana but for sports in general. He lauded the Guyana Volleyball Federation, the National Sports Commission and Republic Bank for their critical contribution towards the success of the venture.
