On October 21, 2024, the transplant team at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), led by Dr. Kishore Persaud, successfully completed a kidney transplant between two identical sisters.
In a statement yesterday, the GPHC said that a 22-year-old female underwent a renal transplant with her identical twin sister as the donor.
“Thanks to the close genetic match, the surgery proceeded smoothly, with no intraoperative complications and minimal immunological risks. Both sisters have recovered excellently, with the donor’s remaining kidney functioning well and the recipient experiencing stable kidney health and optimal graft function”, the statement said.
Both sisters are now home and will receive follow-up care to monitor their kidney health and ensure lasting success, the release said.
