The Ministry of Labour yesterday said that its Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has launched an investigation into the fatal workplace accident on Tuesday at Kara Kara Mine in Mackenzie, Linden.
The accident claimed the life of 19-year-old Heavy-Duty Equipment Operator, Ezekiel Benjamin, who was employed by Dindyal Sookram of D. Sookram & Daughters General Contractor.
Benjamin was operating an XCMG excavator to construct a drainage system intended to channel water from the surrounding area to the Kara Kara Creek. During the operation, the excavator began sinking
Following the incident, local authorities were immediately notified, including the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, and the Ministry of Labour.
Occupational Safety and Health Officer Ray Hosannah, representing the Labour Ministry, visited the site to conduct a preliminary investigation to identify the underlying causes of the accident and develop safety recommendations to prevent future incidents.
