Maybe that Tuesday 5:30 am meeting was not about problem solving

Dear Editor,

The violence and trauma of Guyana’s plantation legacy were on show on Tuesday 12 Nov at the 5:30 am meeting at State House to discuss the lack of progress on projects. The power play in having the meeting at the strange time, and then the words used to describe the exchange – shellacking, berating, chiding, blasting… shadows of massa/maningah in the marning at the order line? And then the cuss down of those who did not attend or were late – surely State House must have staff who monitor communications if people send excuses for non-attendance? Doesn’t the Government recognise that it shows its weaknesses every time it puts on these live streams where questions are asked to which the answers are not previously known?

There have been previous ‘warnings’ from other Government officials to contractors but like the warnings alone are not solving any problems. There have been no reports in the public accessible domain and social media of the responses from the ministers and others who get cuss up, no reports on the various causes for delay. There are no reports of the outcome of the performance on Tuesday morning, apart from nuff laughs and memes and so on at the various clips of the person who is not supposed to be generating laughs and memes on serious business. A shame that the headlines did not read “Early morning meeting leads to problem solving strategies to deal with the delayed projects”, but then maybe the meeting was not to solve problems.

Sincerely,
