The critical roles expected of a minister and ministry of culture in a post-colonial society

Dear Editor,

In any society emerging out of the ravages of imperial domination, colonial exploitation and polarisation, the Minister, and Ministry responsible for Youth, Sport & Culture has a powerful and enabling role to play in harmonising a nation to bring light where there was darkness and understanding; to dispell the of many myths created over the past several generations in Guyana.

So when we have the Director of the Burrowes School of Art being confronted by a person with racially explicit remarks is a serious matter and when as is now evident, this matter is brought to the attention of the highest official in the Ministry of Youth Sport & Culture and the issue is being swept under the carpet, we are violating the intent of our founding fathers and those who struggled against racism and discrimination. When a young man, Joel Adams, loses his life at the government owned and controlled National Aquatic Centre and no one so far has offered an explanation, why a group of young persons were taken to the swimming pool with inadequate and untrained personnel to ensure their safety, ths constitutes criminal negligence, but no one is made accountable.

When the said Ministry sets out to frustrate an Annual Football Competition played by a particular group of young men, we are guilty of violating the dreams of those men and women, who sought to overcome the wickedness and divisiveness of a colonial society. Dr. Jagan, Hubert Nataniel Critchlow, Enmore Martyrs, Forbes Burnham and others must be shedding tears at what is taking place in our society today. Dear Editor, this situation is worsened by a group of businessmen and the nouveau riche who seem to have a disdain for the poor in keeping with the well-oiled propaganda machine. Thank God for the independent media, Stabroek News and Kaieteur News, who in spite of threats sought to free us from impending bondage.

Sincerely,

Hamilton Green
