Guyanese men out of singles competition on opening day

– Ramdhani, Haynes in action today

The Guyanese male badminton players in Suriname felt the sting of defeat yesterday as they were eliminated on the opening day of the Suriname International Championship.

Frank Waddell, Nkosi Beaton, and Jonathan Debidin were the men to be knocked out from the round of 16 qualifiers.

Waddell played Suriname’s Joshua Lan and lost in a fighting set of three, losing 10-21 before rallying in the second game to bounce back 22-20. However, Lan would get the better of him in the next set (17-21) to seal qualification.

Beaton, on the other hand, a cricketer by profession, went out to Surinamese Terrence Li in straight sets of 9-21 and 10-21.

Meanwhile, Debidin suffered a similar fate to that of Beaton, losing 12-21 and 14-21 to another Surinamese, Jason Zeng.

While the trio has been knocked out of the singles format, they are still in contention in the doubles format.

On the other hand, Priyanna Ramdhani and Akili Haynes will be in action today in the round of 16 as they look to book progression to the next phase of the competition.
