The Abary sluice door suffered major damage this afternoon as a result of the spring tide causing flood threats to low-lying areas along the Belamy drain from Abary to Airy Hall, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
A release from the Ministry of Agriculture said that swift action from the MMA saw immediate mobilization of equipment to block major channels in Burma to prevent floodwater from entering rice cultivation areas.
Stop logs will also be installed when the tide changes.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha and Chairman of the NDIA, Lionel Wordsworth are heading to the area to conduct an assessment and meet with affected residents.
Residents in the area have not been affected by flooding, the release said.
