(Trinidad Express) A Ste Madeliene man who had spoken out on discrimination against homosexuality was gunned down outside his home on Friday night.

Kennty Mitchell, 47, was found lying on the roadway near his Richie Street home at around 11.40pm.

Police said Mitchell, a maxi taxi driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. The area was cordoned off and a search carried out for the shooter but no one was found.

The Express visited the area yesterday but residents were reluctant to speak about the incident.

A resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Mitchell was seen standing outside his home dressed in three-quarter pants and slippers, shortly before the shooting.

“He looked like he was waiting for someone. Then there were gunshots and everyone ran inside. When we came outside we saw him on the roadway motionless,” the resident said.

Police confirmed that Mitchell had reported being harassed and the matter was investigated. No one was detained.

In 2011, Mitchell spoke publicly on the issue of homosexuality and discrimination. He said the government had failed homosexuals in Trinidad and Tobago, forcing them to live secret lives.

But, Mitchell said, he was a fighter and would continue to speak out on the topic.

He had also won two lawsuits against the police for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. The Sunday Express was told that Mitchell had other matters pending before the court.

Homicide officers say the motive for Mitchell’s killing has not yet been determined.
