Dear Editor,
With all of the money being spent, hundreds of projects underway and a record budget, there has been no competent strategy developed and adequate prioritization given to ensure that flooding will be avoided. All of the sluices in poor condition should have already been replaced and upgraded. The poor strategy currently being implemented is a sign of utter incompetence. Flooding affects food security, people’s health, the sugar industry and the infrastructural works underway. It has the ability to affect every economic sector that is dependent on the coastal plains of the country. What sense does it make to build roads that will be washed away? The rising tide is not a myth, it is the reality of the future. The drainage and irrigation must be upgraded before building in what is becoming a larger flood zone. Take the flood risks away before doing other infrastructure works. There is no need to throw good money into something that will not last. Prevent the flooding!
With concern,
