Kitty mechanic jailed for 24 months on firearm charge

Lloyd Gittens, a 26-year-old mechanic of Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown was sentenced to 24 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Gittens had been charged with discharging a loaded firearm at Police Constable Elijah Vichara, and Odell Thomas with intent to cause bodily harm to maim and disfigure on September 16., at D’Andrade Street, Newtown, Kitty.

Gittens pleaded not guilty to discharging the firearm at Vichara and said he was not aware that Vichara was a police constable. On the charge of discharging a firearm at Thomas, Magistrate Fabayo Azore entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

On October 21, 2024 in court via Zoom, when the first charge of discharging a loaded firearm was read to him, Gittens insisted on explaining himself to the court. He told the magistrate that a $5 million bounty had been placed on his life, and that he mistook Thomas for the person behind the threat. According to his account, when Thomas entered his yard, he fired in self-defence. Gittens had on October 21, 2024, also pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery under arms where on September 6, 2024 while armed with a gun, he robbed Joshua Holder of two gold diamond-encrusted chains valued at $620,000.

He returns to court on December 9, 2024.
