One person died this morning after an accident involving two trucks on Sheriff Street.

The dead man has been identified as Carlton Smartt, an electrical contractor.

Smartt’s friend Ramdeo Kumar made the following post about him:

“I’m literally unable to work this morning. After reading about the accidents on Sheriff Street this morning I decided to check in on some folks in the area (as friends were doing with me). Llewellyn Gardner one of Guyana’s oldest marathon runner was checked safe, he then said he came out and check if it affected me. Lo and behold a friend Irzad Zamal messaged and gave me some heartbreaking news – Mr Carlton Smartt – our electrical contractor was run down by the truck driver that jumped sheriff street…

“He worked with Bassoo and Sons but hustled before and after work. He was the epitome of a working class father wanting the best for his children and family. He was on his way to Beacon Roti to address an issue we had. He was going to Beacon Cafe afterwards. So I guess he died on the way to work – doing what he loved.
As I type this I’m so heartbroken for this young family. Guyana is poorer for this guy was 10 electrician in one – I could leave him anywhere in the premises without a worry. He had my back as they say”.

One of the trucks crashed into a house.

Reports are that one of trucks was crossing Sheriff Street while the other was travelling along Sheriff Street. Both were speeding at the time and one of the trucks clipped the back of the other causing both drivers to lose control. While one partially ended up in the canal the other careened into a building known as Green House.
